Tackling the speed dangers
Villagers in Helmdon will be among those to take speed
enforcement into their own hands when they take part in
a pilot project.
The scheme is being operated in seven villages in Northants
with the aim of getting communities tackling speeding problems
in their own area.
The project has the support of the county council, the police
and other groups in Northants.
Sergeant Darren Elliott, who heads the enforcement team
at the county's safety camera partnership, said: "The
concept of community speed watch is to involve the community
more in tackling this major problem.
"The villages are asked to encourage their own residents
to pledge to stick to the speed limit in their village and
across the county.
"In return, we will supply them with the support and
tools necessary to encourage slower and safer driving."
High visibility poster boards with a 'slowdown' message
will be displayed in Helmdon, there will be regular visits
from the safety camera team coupled with visits by a portable
board which flashes at motorists who are driving too fast.
