Victory in the air as carnival capers end peace and quiet
August 1995
Thousands of people had a great day out at the Helmdon Carnival on Monday.
The carnival, which had a war theme to coincide with the recent VE and VJ Day celebrations, kicked off with a parade of floats from the station yard to the sports field.
Decked in bunting and World War Two attire, floats like that from the Helmdon Young Husbands' Organisation and the Women's Institute delighted people lining the route.
The winner of the float competition was the Helmdon Women's Club float which depicted forces sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn.

Other attractions included a huge fete in the sports field which featured a parachute display, pipe bands, military vehicles, a sheep shearing demonstration, archery shooting and a barbecue.
Around £4,000 was raised from the carnival which will go towards the Brackley Cottage Hospital, the Brackley Ambulance Service and village organisations.
