More than 20 members of Helmdon Women's Institute have celebrated
their eighty-fifth anniversary.
The celebrations led by president Ann Harman took place on Wednesday,
March 8th, in Helmdon Reading Room.
They were joined by Diana Birch, chair of the Northamptonshire
Federation and two past Federation chairs,Mildred Cockram and
Christine Farmer.
After a talk by Janice Johnson on the making of a Quaker tapestry,
they enjoyed the anniversary cake and a champagne toast to the
next 85 years.
Canon Bartlett and his sisters founded the Helmdon branch of
the WI which first met on March 21, 1921.
Members paid an annual subscription of two shillings and the
primary aim of meetings was to educate in housewifery arts.
The Helmdon branch still joins together women of the village
but now has a wider range of interests and activities.
