CARNIVAL BRINGS IN CASH FOR CHARITIES

Helmdon’s annual carnival on Bank holiday Monday is expected to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Hundreds of villagers and guests braved early downpours to line the route of the float procession which this year had the theme of countries of the world.

Five flats, put together by village organisations like the Bridge Players and Helmdon Acorns, delighted the crowds with their innovative ideas and decorations.

“It wasn’t looking so good in the morning when the weather looked terrible, but luckily it began to clear later on which we all were thankful for,” said Peter Burns, a carnival committee member.

At the sports ground there were funfair-type games including a mini-Gladiators event.  There was a bungee run game while more sedate firms of entertainment included Irish dancing and music by the army cadet band.

A total of 15 people entered the vintage ploughing competition and the sheep shearing exhibition also drew big crowds.
