A THANK YOU FROM THEM

Glad to be back home after a fire which gutted their front room, Helmdon couple Doris and Joe Sheppard have come through their ordeal smiling, thanks to their wonderful relatives, friends and neighbours.

This week they were full of gratitude for everybody who helped out after disaster struck on Sunday January 10th

Doris and Joe were forced to quit their home in Wappenham Road for two weeks after the fire destroyed most of the furnishings in the front room which has doubled as Joe’s bedroom since he suffered a stroke.

Doris, who is well-known in the village as the “paper girl”, said there were so many heroes.

Like the unknown motorist who raised the alarm, neighbours who helped Joe out of the house, Mr and Mrs Eric Lawrence who opened their home to be couple while their room was being cleaned up, Mr and Mrs Peter Lawrence and son David who helped in all sorts of ways.

Then there were Mrs Margaret Reardon, and Mrs Rosemary Gulliver, who helped with the mammoth cleaning task and other friends who came forward with help, and flowers, gifts and messages.

“And Doris also praised the fire brigade and police, who were “very helpful”.  “They were all much appreciated,” she said.

With all the cruelty and crime reported in the national paper and on TV, the Advertiser is pleased to be able to report such a happy reaction to a crisis.
