The bakehouse was built in the late eighteenth century and carried on in business until
the middle of the nineteenth. It is interesting that it was in the hands
of comparatively few families so business must have been steady and fairly
lucrative. The first recorded baker was Matthew Hinton in 1798 and he is
followed by the Osborne family, Luke Watson, Thomas Rigby Adams, George
Moore, Frederick Oakey and Conrad King. Its demise was inevitable. Small
bakers were facing the competition of the bread factories, which were making
an impact in the market.
