Trail: Bakehouse

The Old Bakehouse The bakehouse was built in the late eighteenth century and carried on in business until the middle of the nineteenth. It is interesting that it was in the hands of comparatively few families so business must have been steady and fairly lucrative. The first recorded baker was Matthew Hinton in 1798 and he is followed by the Osborne family, Luke Watson, Thomas Rigby Adams, George Moore, Frederick Oakey and Conrad King. Its demise was inevitable. Small bakers were facing the competition of the bread factories, which were making an impact in the market.
